Our Story
From Vision to Reality
SCI was founded on entrepreneurial ambition and industry expertise. After years of working in farm management, real estate, and agriculture, Calvin and Kayla McBride recognized a growing demand for erosion control solutions. In 2018, inspired by a job site using the same equipment they already owned, they took a leap of faith.
With just one truck and old equipment, SCI was born. The first few years were about laying a strong foundation, building relationships, and growing at a sustainable pace. Today, SCI is one of Iowa’s leading erosion control contractors, known for superior service, consistent execution, and integrity in every project.
Our Growth Timeline
2011-2016
Calvin and Kayla attended Iowa State University studying Agricultural Business and Agronomy.
2017
Calvin and Kayla got married and continued to work in farm management and sales.
2018
Calvin and Kayla were inspired while watching a job site. With one truck and old equipment, they launched Soil Concepts Inc in September 2018.
2019
SCI incorporated, hired their first employees, and began working with civil contractors. The team grew to 5 full-time employees by year-end.
2020
SCI tripled in size, grew to 15 employees, and expanded services.
2021
The company lands Cargill as a major client and expanded operations with H2B workers, including Roberto and Rodolfo.
2022
SCI secured their largest project yet with Iowa Premium Beef Plant and grew their fleet to 4 tractors and 10 work trucks.
2023
SCI hired full-time truck drivers and equipment operators, bringing the company to full capacity.
2024
SCI landed a highly classified project with Mortenson and continued expanding into DOT, municipal, industrial, and large-scale commercial projects.
Today
With 20+ full-time employees and a fleet nearly 3X larger, SCI is one of Iowa’s largest erosion control contractors, known for delivering quality work, on time, with integrity.
